Sometimes&#8230; what\u2019s offensive to one person isn\u2019t so to another.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the reason you need to read this article \u2013 to learn to recognize potential sexual harassment situations.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is Sexual Harassment?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Any conduct of sexual nature &#8211; physical, verbal or visual \u2013 could be termed as sexual harassment if and when<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Submission to such conduct is made a term or condition for employment.<\/li>\n<li>Employment decisions \u2013 that affect the individual \u2013 are based upon submission to or rejection of such conduct.<\/li>\n<li>Such conduct creates a hostile work environment, interferes with an employee\u2019s performance and affects the terms of an individual\u2019s employment.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For ease of explanation, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sexual_harassment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">sexual harassment is classified<\/a> as either <em>quid pro quo<\/em> or <em>hostile environment<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Quid pro quo<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Simply stated, <strong>Quid pro quo <\/strong>is \u2013 <em>this for that. <\/em>\u00a0This type of harassment is usually perpetrated by a supervisor or other person in a position of authority. It\u2019s about a disparity of power between two people \u2013 a supervisor\/manager and a subordinate.<\/p>\n<p>One example of quid pro quo is an employee who is threatened with a demotion (or promised a promotion) in exchange for sexual favors.<\/p>\n<p>Actions and behaviors that would be considered harassment:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Unwelcomed sexual advances,<\/li>\n<li>Requests for sexual favors<\/li>\n<li>Verbal or physical conducts of a sexual nature, such as lewd comments or inappropriate touching.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong>Hostile environment<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The other form of sexual harassment is referred as <strong>Hostile environment<\/strong> harassment. Situations, where requests for sexual favors are severe enough to impact an employee&#8217;s work performance, unreasonably.<\/p>\n<p>Consider a situation in which a person is subjected to sexual advances, or requests for sexual favors, or other verbal or physical behaviors of a sexual nature \u2013 and \u2013<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The conduct is unwelcomed.<\/li>\n<li>The conduct is sufficiently severe to alter the conditions of the individual\u2019s employment, and<\/li>\n<li>Creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>How do you recognize the behaviors that could be considered as sexual harassment? <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Sexual harassment can be conducted in many different ways, including verbally, physically, or visually. Even gestures such as body movement that express sexually suggestive ideas can be considered as sexual harassment.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Examples of Verbal Harassment<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Repeated unsolicited propositions for dates and\/or sexual intercourse.<\/li>\n<li>Suggestive comments.<\/li>\n<li>Implied or overt threats for a sexual favor.<\/li>\n<li>Comments or questions about the sensuality of a person, or his or her spouse or significant others.<\/li>\n<li>Off-color jokes<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4><strong>Examples of Non-Verbal Harassment<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Sexual advances<\/li>\n<li>Fondling<\/li>\n<li>Shoulder massages<\/li>\n<li>Pinching<\/li>\n<li>Grabbing<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4><strong>Examples of Visual Harassment<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Sexually suggestive pictures, photos, cartoons, screen savers.<\/li>\n<li>Lewd e-mails or texts.<\/li>\n<li>Sexually suggestive posts on social media.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>Now that you have some idea of what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empowerelearning.com\/blog\/what-are-the-benefits-of-a-harassment-free-workplace\/\"><strong>sexual harassment prevention<\/strong><\/a> is- Here are a few questions for you- <\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Are you familiar with your organization\u2019s sexual harassment policy?<\/li>\n<li>Are you able to recognize sexual harassment?<\/li>\n<li>Do you know how to report sexual harassment, and to whom to report to?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What actions or behaviors do you believe could be considered as sexual harassment?\u00a0Most of us have witnessed behaviors that could be considered sexual harassment in the workplace at one time or another \u2013 even if in a subtle form.
