Iowa Clinic Ends Ransomware Attack without Paying

Recovering from a ransomware attack without paying ransom is BIG news – especially for small healthcare providers whose operations could get disrupted indefinitely in case of such a breach.

An Iowa clinic has managed to do and that too within a day’s period. Jones eye clinic and its affiliated surgery center managed to restore their systems using backup information and end the ransomware attack without paying the ransom amount.

How did they manage it? They were prepared. It appears they had a robust backup strategy and made regular backups. As Philip Casesa of ISC2 points out, once your files are encrypted, you’re only option is to restore the backup. Philip continues, what you need is to have a backup process that lets you roll back a few days and restore everything as it was.

What is Ransomware?

Ransomware are a type of malware that encrypt the files on a computer or server, rendering them inaccessible until a specified ransom is paid to the attacker. Typically, ransomware get installed on your computers whenever a user clicks on a malicious link or opens a file attached with an email containing the malware.
