Food manufacturing facilities combine electrical equipment with water, moisture, and frequent washdown cycles — a combination that raises the stakes for electrical safety well beyond a typical dry manufacturing environment. This course covers general electrical safety awareness under OSHA's general industry electrical standards, 29 CFR 1910 Subpart S (1910.301 through 1910.399).
Subpart S sets requirements for safe electrical installations and safe work practices, and draws heavily on the National Electrical Code and NFPA 70E, the National Fire Protection Association's standard for electrical safety in the workplace. OSHA does not directly enforce NFPA 70E, but it is frequently used to support citations under related OSHA standards, including the personal protective equipment requirements in 1910.335 for work around electrical hazards. OSHA's electrical standards distinguish between "qualified" employees, who are trained and authorized to work on energized equipment, and "unqualified" employees, who must maintain safe approach distances and never attempt electrical repairs or troubleshooting themselves.
This course is intended as general awareness training for all employees who work around electrical equipment, panels, and washdown-rated fixtures — not as qualified-electrical-worker training, which requires separate, role-specific instruction and hands-on evaluation for maintenance and electrical staff.
After completing this course, learners will be able to recognize common electrical hazards in a food facility, including wet-location and washdown-area risks, understand the difference between qualified and unqualified employee responsibilities, identify damaged cords, panels, or equipment that should be reported, and know why only qualified, authorized employees may open panels or perform electrical repairs.
