Grain handling facilities — including grain elevators, feed mills, flour mills, rice mills, dry corn mills, and soybean processing operations — combine two hazards that most other food facilities don't face at the same scale: combustible grain dust that can fuel a fire or explosion, and bulk stored grain that can engulf and suffocate a worker in seconds. This course covers the safety practices workers need to manage both.
The governing standard is OSHA 29 CFR 1910.272, Grain Handling Facilities. It requires a written housekeeping program to control fugitive grain dust accumulation on floors, ledges, and equipment; controls on hot work and hazardous energy around grain handling equipment; and specific protections against engulfment, including a prohibition on standing beneath a bridging or hung-up grain condition or in any other location where sliding or falling grain could bury a worker. The standard also requires facilities to inform contractors of known fire, explosion, and entry hazards before they begin work.
This course is designed for workers who operate, clean, or enter bins, silos, tanks, or grain-handling equipment such as legs, conveyors, and dryers. It applies to both facility employees and contractors working in or around grain storage and handling areas.
After completing this course, learners will be able to identify sources and accumulation points of combustible grain dust, describe the housekeeping practices required to control them, recognize bridging and engulfment hazards before entering a bin or silo, and explain the additional precautions required when hazardous energy or hot work is involved in grain handling equipment.
