About this course
This course gives employees a working knowledge of OSHA's general industry standards under 29 CFR 1910 — the body of federal regulations that sets minimum safety requirements for nearly every US workplace, including food manufacturing facilities. Rather than focusing on one hazard, it builds a baseline understanding of how OSHA's rules are structured and where employees fit into the compliance picture.
The course covers the standards employees encounter most often on a plant floor: walking-working surfaces (Subpart D), which govern floors, aisles, ladders, and fall protection; personal protective equipment (Subpart I), which requires employers to assess hazards and provide appropriate PPE at no cost to employees; and exit route and housekeeping requirements that keep aisles and emergency exits clear. It also explains Section 5(a)(1), the General Duty Clause, which obligates employers to address recognized hazards even when no specific standard applies, and outlines employees' rights under the OSH Act, including the right to report hazards and request an OSHA inspection without retaliation.
This training is appropriate for all employees and works well as a compliance-literacy companion to hazard-specific courses such as Hazard Communication or Machine Guarding — it explains the "why" and "how" behind the rules those courses apply on the floor.
After completing this course, learners will be able to identify the general industry standards most relevant to their role, recognize safe versus unsafe walking-working surface conditions, understand employer and employee responsibilities for PPE, and describe their rights to report hazards without fear of retaliation.
