HIPAA

What you will learn

emPower HIPAA module consists of 4 detailed courses updated regularly to satisfy HIPAA training requirements. The online HIPAA training covers the basics of the law, the privacy rule and the security rule. It also looks at the roles and responsibilities of HIPAA business associates. Along with this, the course also covers ARRA and the HITECH act.

Under HIPAA, all individuals who come into contact with protected health information need to know what PHI is, its value, and how to protect the confidentiality and  integrity of such information. With emPower’s HIPAA compliance training, you’ll learn about various security policies that need to be in place to guard the PHI from cyber attacks. You’ll also learn to protect the information from accidental disclosures, and how to deal with breaches.

Why it is important

The HHS Office of Civil Rights audits healthcare organizations to verify their compliance with HIPAA. For this, you must train your staff in the three HIPAA rules. The three rules are the Privacy rule, the Security rule, and the breach notification. Training on these rules is important. Firstly, they should know why they need to follow the three rules. Secondly, they must know how to follow them. And thirdly, the consequences of non-compliance.

Without proper training, your employees might violate HIPAA in error. For instance, cases of violating an individual’s “Right to Access” under HIPAA are really common. Every year, organizations pay tens of thousands of dollars in fines for this violation. Such penalties could have been avoided with proper training.

HIPAA compliance requires you to follow the Privacy, Security, and Breach notification rules. For this, we recommend that you start with HIPAA compliance training. The training would give you an idea regarding HIPAA requirements. From there, you can begin looking into your processes.

HIPAA compliance training needs to be a priority of individuals and organizations that interact with protected health information, or PHI. In essence, if you or your organization receives, sends, stores, creates, or edits PHI, you should go through HIPAA training.

HIPAA compliance training of all new staff needs to happen within 30 days. Thereafter, they should be retrained at least annually. You should follow this training time-table for your business associates and their workers as well. For your existing employees, we recommend that you should conduct the training as soon as possible, if you haven’t done so already.

The length of your HIPAA training depends upon your role and responsibilities. Some employees may require training on HIPAA basics; while others may require training on HIPAA for business associates as well. On the other hand, some may need to take information security modules as well.
